Ahhhhhh, the great American road trip. It’s a rite of passage for every family to pack the bags, get in the car, and go see that special something that you can’t find at home. And while that might look a bit different in 2020, there are a lot of ways you can still take a trip and be safe.
Here in Fairfax County, there are a lot of businesses taking extra precautions and we are ready to welcome you whenever you’re ready to travel. And because Virginia is awesome, destinations all over the state have joined together to point out road-trip worthy destinations for anyone wanting to explore our sites. The campaign is called WanderLove, and a safe fall road trip to Northern Virginia is only a tank of gas away. Here are some things you’ll find when you visit Fairfax County.
Fall Foliage Viewing
The autumn leaves are about to burst into full fall glory at some of the most beautiful locations around the county. It’s the perfect way to get out and about, breathe in the fresh air, and let the amazing colors calm your soul.
Craft Breweries with Outdoor Patios
One of my favorite things to do when visiting somewhere is to check out the local breweries and distilleries. I find this is a great way to experience an authentic local vibe, and also a way to get some legit good drink. There’s nothing like coming back home and telling all your jealous friends about that “perfect” beer that they can’t have unless they go and try it for themselves. And while the weather is turning cooler, the warmish days of fall make for a great atmosphere to cozy up with some beer and take in some fresh air. Our breweries’ beer patios are open for business and are serving one-of-a-kind beer for you to go home and brag about.
Historic Sites with Outdoor Spaces
If you’re looking to take in some of Northern Virginia’s rich history while being able to relax and keep socially distanced, we have some fantastic options for you. Our historic sites are well equipped with plenty of outdoor space for you to get out and explore. Our historic sites have increased their cleaning protocols for those who feel comfortable enough to venture inside their museums or for those who want to head indoors for a bit. And autumn is the perfect time to see the sites as the fall tones of the leaves make for majestic images and the perfect sweater weather makes it a breeze to spend the day walking the grounds without worrying about it being too hot.
Award-Winning Wineries
Fairfax County is home to two award-winning wineries, Paradise Springs and The Winery at Bull Run. Each offers up unique tasting experiences in outdoor settings that make it a nice and relaxing environment to spend a day or evening. Each location has the option to reserve your own private space on-site so social distancing isn’t a problem, and each also offers food options and entertainment to keep you fed and happy. So stop by, get some drinks, and bring home a bottle (or two!).
Hiking Trails
Despite Fairfax County being so close to Washington, DC, we’re proud of the fact that we have tens of thousands of acres of parkland to explore. And many of our parks offer up fantastic hiking opportunities, which is always a popular activity when seeking out perfect autumn leaf-peeping adventures. If you’re looking for a brief excursion to say “hi” to Mother Nature, but still want all the amenities of an urban destination at your fingertips, Fairfax County is the place for you.
We hope to see you here this autumn, and if you find a special place that you think other travelers should know about, make sure to share it on your social media channels using the #FXVA hashtag and tag us in your post. We love to see people here having fun and we might even showcase your adventures on our own social media feeds. Stay safe everyone, don’t forget to please wear a mask or face covering when indoors and observe Virginia’s current safety guidelines when you travel.
